Experience the spectacular coastal scenery and epic landscapes on a luxury door to door coach tour, that combines quaint Welsh villages, meandering rivers, and natural beauty in abundance. The stunning Welsh landscape is a tapestry, rich in history and legend, with more than 600 castles, and the most castles per square mile than any other country in the world, twelve of them can be seen in Pembrokeshire. One of the most iconic strands of the Welsh heritage is the red dragon, first adopted in the early fifth century to symbolise the Welsh power and authority after the Romans withdrew from Britain. Look out for all the fluttering Welsh dragon flags!
Our Welsh tour base is the historic market town of Carmathen, on the banks of the river Towey and is said to be the oldest town in Wales, with narrow winding streets and castle ruins. Carmarthen means Merlin’s Fort- named after King Arthur’s wizard, according to local folklore, Merlin is said to have been born nearby, around 480AD – hopefully, you will have a magical time!
After travelling through the picturesque Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, our first stop is St Davids, the smallest city in Britain. Continuing to Cardigan with its tranquil, unspoilt coastline, blue flag beaches and secluded sandy coves, with some of them ideal for smuggling in days gone by! Pausing on our return at Cenarth Falls, a stunning natural beauty spot with a series of impressive waterfalls and a well-known salmon leap.
Next, we head to Tenby, described as the ‘Jewel in the Crown of Pembrokeshire’, for a full day in this enchanting medieval hamlet enclosed by an imposing 13th century stone wall with a maze of narrow cobbled streets, it has an endearing timeless appeal. Tenby’s Welsh name translates to ‘Little Fortress of the Fish’, which makes perfect sense when you explore this charming little harbour town. This picturesque setting in addition to the beautiful golden beaches includes stunning views from the cliff tops and the impressive Goscar Rock nestles in the sand or sea depending on the tide. If you enjoy discovering some history on your holiday, then the fascinating Tudor Merchant’s House and captivating St Mary’s Church will tick the box!
On our final day we visit one of Wales’ finest gardens, Aberglasney Gardens, at its heart lies a fully restored Elizabethan Cloister Garden that is the only surviving one of its kind. With ten acres of over twenty different garden styles from The Asiatic Garden to the Bishop Rudd’s walk and the Jubilee woodland to the Ninfarium – a truly spectacular horticultural showcase!
Returning to Carmarthen for some leisure time, why not enjoy some traditional Welsh delicacies including laverbread, Welsh cakes, bara brith (speckled bread) or even a bowl of cawl (Welsh stew). Or perhaps you would rather buy some gifts or treat yourself, possibly even purchasing an ornately carved Welsh love spoon!
