Pies & Spies Weekend - 3rd September 2022

Pies & Spies Weekend - 3rd September 2022

25 July 2022

Our Pies & Spies Weekend is your chance to learn about a famous British culinary delight and be able to step back in time to discover Second World War cryptological secrets.

On Day one you will arrive at the picturesque Leicestershire countryside market town of Melton Mowbray, sometimes promoted as Britain’s “Rural Capital of Food” and be able to experience Melton’s gastronomic specialities of Stilton Cheese and the renowned Melton Mowbray pork pie.

The name Melton comes from the early English word Medeltone – meaning “Middletown surrounded by small hamlets”. Mowbray is the Norman family name of early Lords of the Manor.

The first recipe was published around 1390. Initially the pie was baked in a clay pot and covered with a rough pastry, then evolved to resemble a mini parcel, thus allowing the pie to be carried whilst at work and out hunting.

What makes a Melton Mowbray pie different to other pies? Well, they have a higher meat content and have PGI Status meaning it must be made within a certain geographical location. They are made with a hot water crust pastry and by not cooking in a case, they develop their characteristic deep golden brown and bowed sides.

On Day two is your opportunity to enjoy and find out about the historic Bletchley Park, a 19th century mansion surrounded by landscaped gardens and woodland. This vibrant heritage attraction was once the top-secret home of the famous Codebreakers, walk in their footsteps to discover how their astonishing achievements helped shorten the Second World War by up to two years and saved the lives of around 14 million people.

Step back in time to explore several exhibitions, all atmospherically decorated to illustrate how Bletchley Park, codename Station X, would have appeared as a Naval Intelligence Office during the War. Relive the stories and experiences of the men and women that worked there and discover the surprisingly important role pigeons played. Bring to life an array of activities that demonstrate how Bletchley Park’s agents including Alan Turing decoded the enemy’s secret messages, most notably in Hut 8 where the Enigma code was broken.

Don’t miss out on this electrifying weekend! Book here ‘it’s as easy as pie!’
